Love Finds a Way: Valentine’s Day at Origin Active Living Seniors Communities

Posted by Origin Active Lifestyle Communities on February 16, 2025 | 3 minute read

At Origin, love isn’t just a memory of the past—it’s a present, living, and thriving part of our community. While some of our community members spent decades with a lifelong partner, others have been given a second chance at love in the most unexpected way.

For many, moving into a senior’s community marked a new chapter in their lives—a transition into a supportive and vibrant environment. But for some, it also led to something even more special: finding love again.

This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate the incredible journeys of couples who met and fell in love after moving into Origin at Longwood, one of Origin Active Living’s senior communities in Nanaimo, BC. These stories prove that love has no expiration date, and that companionship, laughter, and shared moments can begin at any stage of life.

A Love Story at Origin at Longwood: Duane & Betty

Duane and Betty’s journey is one of unexpected love, laughter, and companionship in the later stages of life. Both had been happily married for decades—Betty for 67 years and Duane for 60—but after losing their spouses within a month of each other, they found themselves starting a new chapter at Origin at Longwood.

Betty’s husband had been in extended care, and her children encouraged her to move to Origin. She arrived in July or August, just before Duane, whose daughter-in-law happened to know Betty’s daughter. A friendly warning was given: “Watch out for Duane.” But neither of them could have expected what would happen next.

Duane had spent seven years caring for his wife during her battle with cancer before she passed in May. When he moved to Origin, he embraced community life, enjoying the pool, gym, workshop, and even movie nights. Betty, too, found comfort in her new surroundings. As they spent time together, their bond grew through shared stories, laughter, and mutual support.

Their relationship flourished within the Origin community, where they enjoyed gardening, working out, going to church, and taking Sunday bus trips together. Duane, known as the “occupational hugger,” brought joy to those around him, and Betty appreciated his lighthearted nature. They understood the realities of aging and loss but chose to make every day count.

With the full support of their families, their love deepened, and though neither intended to marry again, it “just happened.” On November 30th, they exchanged vows at Origin at Longwood, celebrating their newfound happiness with the community that had brought them together.

Their advice for others looking for love at any age? Be friends first. Find someone easy to talk to and connect with. Let things unfold naturally, whether it leads to friendship, companionship, or something more.

Their story can be summed up in one sentence:
"Pure joy, lots of laughter, and being a silly old fart together."

A Love Story at Origin at Longwood: Marc & Joan

Marc and Joan’s journey to love began over shared meals at the Harvest Dining Room. Joan moved into Origin at Longwood in 2020, and Marc followed in 2021. Though neither had been looking for a relationship, fate had other plans.

What started as a simple table-mate friendship gradually deepened over six months. Joan found Marc to be an intriguing and engaging person, while Marc admired Joan’s beauty and warm personality. Their bond grew through shared interests—both being avid readers and regular visitors to the Origin Library. Their first New Year’s Eve together was a defining moment, marking the beginning of something special.

Their relationship unfolded effortlessly. Family introductions went smoothly, and they faced no real challenges along the way. Marc was deeply impressed by Joan’s career as a registered nurse, while Joan was captivated by Marc’s rich life experiences, particularly his graduate studies in Europe, which took him to places like Florence and Normandy. His academic journey ultimately led him to become a professor, culminating in a distinguished 25-years at the University of British Columbia.

The couple cherishes every moment together, always affectionate and caring. Their most cherished memory? Their wedding, held in the comfort of their suite at Origin at Longwood—a celebration of a love they never expected to find.

When asked to describe their love story, they put it simply:
"A real find," said Marc.
"Something we never dreamt about or thought to find—who finds love in their 80s? We found it at Origin," said Joan.

Love Grows at Origin
